The range
- Getting to the range: The range is situated some 440 to 500 kilometres north of Johannesburg,
not far from the Zimbabwean border.
- On arrival in Johannesburg International Airport, you can drive to the range (car rental service),
take an inter-provincial bus tour or charter a flight to your destination. SA Airlink offers flights
from Johannesburg to Pietersburg at approximately US$200 per person (return). Arrangements
may be made with the CCO for transfer from the airport to Pietersburg to your lodge (additional
cost). A round trip (personal transfer by lodge management) from Johannesburg International
Airport to your lodge will be charged out at approximately US$900 per vehicle.
The road to Louis Trichard is generally in good condition and a large part of the road is dual
carriage way. A section of the road is a toll road and tollgate fees vary from approximately
US$2.00 to US$6 per vehicle.
- Please note that it is not advisable to travel on the roads after dusk/evening time as animals often
run across the road and if you are not familiar with the roads accidents may occur.
- The ranges are situated on the Mutamba Ranch, a private game ranch of some 2500 ha which lies
on the main road to Zimbabwe.
- Four ranges and a practise range will be set up. The four tournament ranges will be far apart and
no direct communication between ranges will be possible.
- Each range will have a walking distance of 4 to 5 kilometres and will be laid out in such a manner
that communication between the groups will not be easy.
- The characteristics of the ranges vary greatly, from fairly flat ranges in sandy areas to ranges with
rock outcrops allowing for a great variety of shots.
- The ranges are safe and you will not be required to bring mountain goat shoes. Each range is
about 15 minutes walking distance from the central office area.
- Mutamba Ranch has a large number of game and participants have a good chance of spotting
these on the ranges during the event.
Climatic conditions:
The range is situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn which technically places it in the
African Savannah region. Although the hottest months are over, daily temperatures of 35 degrees
Celsius and over may be expected. Night temperatures may drop to 20 degrees Celsius. The
chance of rain is small and rain usually comes in the form of showers.
Clothing and accessories:
Clothing should be casual and lightweight. Jeans, shorts and a comfortable pair of walking shoes
are recommended. A lightweight sweater and jacket are necessary during the morning and
evening.
It is recommended to bring a pair of sunglasses, a swimming costume and a hat for your comfort.
Special sunblock will be on sale on the range and you are advised not to purchase your local
suntan lotion. Binoculars will increase your game viewing pleasure.
The ranch has a small swimming pool and several showers to help you to cool off after the day's
shoot.
For the pre- or post-tournament hunter:
Lightweight khaki or similar clothing and comfortable soft-soled walking boots are recommended
during the hunt. When packing for your trip, please keep in mind that all the lodges offer a laundry
service.
Video cameras/electrical apparatus:
When bringing a video camera, hair dryer etc. please pack electricity convertors applicable to the
country you are from and the country of origin of apparatus. Adaptor plugs for these kits may be
requested from the lodge management. We have three prong round plugs of 220 volts.

typical South African barbeque and other dishes will be served.
Award ceremony:
A special award ceremony will be held on the day after the event. The ceremony will include the
medal ward, a buffet dinner, music and dance for those who wish to continue celebrating.
Payment for the ceremony to be made when you register on the range.
Medical care:
Two of the hosting club members are local medical practitioners and will be available in case of
an accident/illness.
We wish to remind you that this is Africa and that some diseases are endemic to the continent.
The area in which we host the shoot is no exception.
Malaria:
Although malaria has been controlled in recent years, it is recommended that anti-malaria
precautions be commenced prior to arrival. Please consult your personal physician.
Anti-malaria tablets (Nivaquine) will be issued to you with confirmation of registration. They are
included in the registration fees.
Bilharzia
A disease you may get when you come into contact with surface water like rivers, dams, etc. Do
not drink/swim in it.
Tick bite fever.
A disease also known in Europe and America. There is no preventative medication and treatment
is usually symptomatic. Special sprays to repel ticks from clothing will be available on the range.
Do not buy local insect repellent, it will not work.
Although the above diseases are endemic to the territory it does not mean that you will be
infected. Most South African archers on the range do not use any preventative medication.
However, remember that symptoms of these diseases will only occur when you have already
returned home. Inform you doctor that you have visited Africa.
Drinking water:
All drinking water is of good quality and can be used without fear. Although watering holes will
be placed on each seventh target we do advise that you carry a water bottle.
Please note:
- South Africa has right hand driven vehicles (i.e. we drive on the left side of the road).
- Please ensure that you have your driver's licence (as well as your international driver's licence)
available for inspection at all times.
- Should you wish to use a car rental service please ensure that you have a credit card (number and
expiry date available) as no cheques or cash will be accepted.
- Videos are available in VHS (South African Format)
Important:
Reservations should be made as soon as possible but not later than 15 January 1997. The WBHC
97 takes place during the South African school holidays and over Easter weekend. The range and
most of the lodges are situated on or near the main road to Zimbabwe and Kruger National Park
and this is generally a very busy time for all concerned. Accommodation may not be that readily
available after the 15th of January 1997.
Deposit:
A reservation number and confirmation of reservation will only be issued for accommodation on
receipt of a 50% deposit of the daily rate (alternatively the full payment). No personal cheques
will be accepted. Please discuss the cancellation fees with the CCO.
